Music scheduling software. We need it because we are all in the business of playing the same songs over and over. For some, the library is a few hundred. For others, it's a few thousand. The music programmer's challenge is to make it sound like the station ISN'T playing the same songs over and over. How's that done?
Don't play any song today at the same time it played yesterday. The Recurrents and Oldies should schedule equally in all the dayparts. Control the spins. If the Power Golds are formatted for 10 plays a week, none should get a dozen plays, none should get only seven. Every song should get the 10 spins you planned.
Sounds like a simple plan. But then music flow and hourly content rules are applied. The Tempo mix has to be balanced. Artist separation factors in. Segue and Sound Code rules are important because "this" kind of song should not play next to "that" kind of song.

Consistency = Success
One of the pillars of successful music radio programming is cosistent music selection, placement and flow, hour by hour, day after day. A "Today's Hits" station should not have the four Hots that play in the 7am hour on Monday being rescheduled in that hour on Tuesday. An Oldies station should not have one hour over-populated with songs from the '00s and the next hour playing mostly '90's hits.
